Micro-climates
By matching the micro-climates to the needs of specific plants one will become successful in growing plants. My next doornext door neighbor had a wild orchid growing in their garden. When his wife passed away, the husband decided to sell his residence. Before he moved, he told me that his wife would have liked me to look after her favorite plant. The orchid was an alpine cypripedium commonly known as a yellow lady slipper. I found a micro-environment in my flower bed. I created a peat moss bed for the terrestrial orchid that was exposed to half light and half shade from an apple tree. The terrestrial orchid was planted next to hardy rose bush and surrounded by phlox . A space was cleared around the orchid. By approximating an alpine environment, the yellow lady slipper has flowered in month of June for the last five years. |
